Frequently asked questions
BioThane® is a robust and durable coated webbing. It consists of a polyester core coated with polymer plastic. It is made in the USA, third-party tested for safety, and registered to ISO 9001:2015 quality standard.
Printed BioThane® is made using UV inks. We source our printed BioThane® from a USA supplier who uses GREENGUARD Gold certified inks, which are free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) once cured and have little to no odor in the finished product.
We use BioThane® for the strapping in all our collars, leads and harnesses because of it's reputable quality and safety - and because it performs in ways that leather, nylon and rope cannot: it won't tear, crumble or peel; it won't cause allergic reactions; it's soft and comfortable to wear; it doesn't absorb water or create smells; and it's super easy to clean and wash.
Every Designer Scrag Tag Dog Collar is handcrafted in Wellington New Zealand, and we seal every cut end of the BioThane® with specialised paints so the collar is perfectly finished and remains waterproof. Yes, the Designer Scrag Tag Dog Collar is made from BioThane® strapping, which is fully waterproof. BioThane® does not absorb water, dries almost instantly and resists mould and mildew. So, rivers, lakes, rain and muddy puddles are no problem! Simply rinse the collar off in warm soapy water and it'll be good as new.
The sea is a different story, and it comes down to the hardware. Salt water is highly corrosive to most metals, so for a dog that swims in the sea, we recommend choosing stainless steel hardware AND a stainless steel name plate. Brass & Neo hardware and aluminium name plates are fine for occasional splashes and wet walks but not for regular exposure to salt water.
Whichever you choose, be sure to rinse the collar with fresh water and soap after every beach visit. Please note that seawater damage on hardware not recommended for the sea is not covered by the Led & Collared® Gear Guarantee.
A Scrag Tag (or name plate) is an etched tag that is built into the Designer Scrag Tag Collar. This means that the tag is a permanent fixture that cannot be removed.
You can choose to have the tag etched with any text or number: your dog's name, your phone number, their council registration number, an agility competition number, or a short message such as 'anxious' or 'do not feed'. You can even add a cute graphic.
We offer both stainless steel and aluminium Scrag Tags (or name plates). Our stainless steel name plates are made from high grade 1.5mm thick T316 stainless steel. To achieve an ultra smooth finish on the name plates, we’ve chosen to use ‘raw’ stainless steel for these tags - this means name plates can have tiny micro scratches - this is a normal feature of raw stainless steel. The plates are sourced and cut locally in Palmerston North, New Zealand and etched by us, using a specialised CO2 laser machine. Etching stainless steel results a smooth black permanent marking.
Our aluminium name plates are made from double-layered high grade anodised aluminium. We offer a range of eight vibrant colours. These name plates are made in the USA and etched by us, using a specialised CO2 laser machine. Etching anodised aluminium results in a bright white permanent marking.
Because we offer so many customisation choices, we knew you'd want to be able to see what the finished product might look like! This is why we created the "See Your Choices" tool. Simply make your customisation selections, then click on the violet "See my Choices" button at the bottom of the screen to see all the component parts together. This clever tool means that you won't end up buying something that you don't like the look of.
Yes, we offer a range of different printed BioThane® designs for our dog collars. We tend to hold the most popular designs in stock, but choose new and exciting designs approximately twice a year. Because we like to offer a lots of options, we hold small amounts of each design - so if you see one you like, grab it quick!

Product safety and care tips:
- Never use our products for anything other than their intended purpose – misuse of gear can lead to injury or damage.
- Do not use our collars, leads or harnesses to tether an unsupervised animal (especially a dog).
- While BioThane® is a robust material that will withstand strong force, it is not totally chew proof.
- The colour of Printed and Glitter BioThane® can be damaged by abrasive surfaces and/or very rough treatment.
- While the aluminium name plates are robust, they will scratch if rubbed against an abrasive surface.
- It is your responsibility to determine which product is appropriate for your animal’s size, strength, and activity level.
- To care for your gear, hand rinse with warm water and soap or gentle detergent, then wipe dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
