Frequently asked questions
BioThane® is a robust and durable coated webbing. It consists of a polyester core coated with polymer plastic. It is made in the USA, third-party tested for safety, and registered to ISO 9001:2015 quality standard.
We use BioThane® for the strapping in all our collars, leads and harnesses because of it's reputable quality and safety - and because it performs in ways that leather, nylon and rope cannot: it won't tear, crumble or peel; it won't cause allergic reactions; it's soft and comfortable to wear; it doesn't absorb water or create smells; and it's super easy to clean and wash.
Every Farm Dog Collar is handcrafted in Wellington New Zealand, and we seal every cut end of the BioThane® with specialised paints so the collar is perfectly finished and remains waterproof. The Farm Dog Collar is specifically designed for working dogs. The purpose of the chain is to temporarily and safely tether a dog to a fence, post or vehicle while working. The chain is not intended to be used as a permanent tether. We do believe dogs should be permanently tethered in any situation. When using the Farm Dog Collar on moving vehicles, we recommend extreme caution and supervision at all times.
To ensure that Farm Dog Collar is suitable for a range of situations, we've designed the collar so that the chain can be easily removed by unscrewing the "oval carabiner". To ensure the oval carabiner is secure, we recommend using a small spanner or similar tool to tighten the screw-locking mechanism on the oval carabiner.
To ensure that Farm Dog Collar is suitable for all types of working dog, we offer chains in two standard lengths. The total length of the chain + clip is 50cm and 57cm. The 50cm length is suitable for most dogs. The 57cm chain is best for large dogs with thick necks (or if you need extra tethering length). Please note that we're able to cut the chains down to any length, so if you need a shorter chain, just email us.
Because working dogs are particularly hard on their gear, hardware in the Farm Dog Collar is almost exclusively made from stainless steel - including all the fittings, buckle and chain. The only exception is the clasp (at the end of the chain), as we offer two different options: (1) self-locking anodised alumininum carabiner, or (2) stainless steel snap hook.
Yes, the Farm Dog Collar can be personalised with a Scrag Tag, an engraved tag attached directly onto the collar, for an extra $16. Just choose 'Personalise' when you're customising your collar.
The Scrag Tag is both safe and unique in that it does not dangle, snag, jingle or fall off. So you can avoid the annoyance jingling noises and rest easy in the knowledge that your dog's details will always be attached to them!
You can choose to have the tag engraved with any text or number: your dog's name, your phone number, their council registration number, an agility competition number, or a short message such as 'anxious' or 'do not feed'. You can even add a cute graphic.
Choose between a (1) Riveted Scrag Tag - permanently fixed with rivets and space for two lines of text; or a (1) Slide-On Scrag Tag - attached with durable plastic sleeve, with space for three lines of text, and removable from a classic-style collar. Tags come in acrylic or T316 stainless steel. A personalised collar is still fully waterproof and stink-proof.

- To care for your gear, hand rinse with warm water and soap or gentle detergent, then wipe dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
