Frequently asked questions
Dog collars can accidentally get caught on crates, kennels, fences, furniture and other dogs (when playing). In the worse case, this can cause injury, strangulation or even death. A safety breakaway collar is designed protect your dog from such outcomes by popping open when caught or snagged on these type of hazards.
Led & Collared® safety breakaway buckles have a "break point" of approximately 5-8kg of pressure (dependong on the collar size you choose). This means what when 5-8kg or pressure of force is applied to the buckle, it will pop open and the collar with fall off.
Despite the functionality of the breakaway buckle, "bypass D-rings" on either side of the buckle mean that you can still use this style of collar to safely walk your dog on lead (without the collar popping off if/when you dog pulls on the lead). Just be sure to attach the lead to both bypass D-rings.
When deciding whether a breakaway collar is suitable for your dog, you will need to weigh up the risk of your dog getting tangled/caught vs. being without easily accessible identification tags/information (keeping in mind that if your dog is micro-chipped, he/she will always have a form of identification attached to them). BioThane® is a robust and durable coated webbing. It consists of a polyester core coated with polymer plastic. It is made in the USA, third-party tested for safety, and registered to ISO 9001:2015 quality standard.
We use BioThane® for the strapping in all our collars, leads and harnesses because of it's reputable quality and safety - and because it performs in ways that leather, nylon and rope cannot: it won't tear, crumble or peel; it won't cause allergic reactions; it's soft and comfortable to wear; it doesn't absorb water or create smells; and it's super easy to clean and wash.
Every Quick Release Collar is handcrafted in Wellington New Zealand, and we seal every cut end of the BioThane® with specialised paints so the collar is perfectly finished and remains waterproof. Yes, the Safety Breakaway Dog Collar can be personalised with a Scrag Tag, an engraved tag attached directly onto the collar, for an extra $16. Just choose 'Personalise' when you're customising your collar.
The Scrag Tag is both safe and unique in that it does not dangle, snag, jingle or fall off. So you can avoid the annoyance jingling noises and rest easy in the knowledge that your dog's details will always be attached to them!
You can choose to have the tag engraved with any text or number: your dog's name, your phone number, their council registration number, an agility competition number, or a short message such as 'anxious' or 'do not feed'. You can even add a cute graphic.
Choose between a (1) Riveted Scrag Tag - permanently fixed with rivets, with space for two lines of text; or a (1) Slide-On Scrag Tag - attached with a durable plastic sleeve, with space for three lines of text. Tags come in acrylic or T316 stainless steel. A personalised collar is still fully waterproof and stink-proof.
Yes, the Safety Breakaway Dog Collar is made from BioThane® strapping, which is fully waterproof. BioThane® does not absorb water, dries almost instantly and resists mould and mildew. So, rivers, lakes, rain and muddy puddles are no problem! Simply rinse the collar off in warm soapy water and it'll be good as new.
The sea is a different story, and it comes down to the hardware. Salt water is highly corrosive to most metals, so for a dog that swims in the sea, we recommend choosing plastic hardware (which is paired with stainless steel). Our metal buckles are excellent quality, but are not suitable for sea swimming.
Please note that seawater damage on hardware not recommended for the sea is not covered by the Led & Collared® Gear Guarantee.

- This Breakaway Safety Collar is intended to unbuckle with sufficient pressure (approximately 6-8kg of weight) - ensure this does not present a risk to your dog.
- While BioThane® is a robust material that will withstand strong force, it is not totally chew proof.
- It is your responsibility to determine which product is appropriate for your animal’s size, strength, and activity level (including use of the velcro strip used for additional buckle security).
- To care for your gear, hand rinse with warm water and soap or gentle detergent, then wipe dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
